True Love?

True love? Does it still exists? Where do you find it?

I found it in the wards. An old, white-haired lady, standing beside the bed of an old gentleman. You see a worried looking spouse watching over her bedridden partner who is constantly asleep. There are gadgets and tubes all over her husband. He does not see her, talk to her nor acknowledge her presence. He is unconscious. He needs a machine to help him breathe. He cannot move. She looks tired and worn out, yet she forces herself to stay awake and wants to be there the moment he wakes up. With the nurses busy with their work, she stands beside her husband who lies in a deep slumber and waits patiently. She takes care of him and wipes him clean day and night. She will never know when he will awaken, or ever regain consciousness, still she stays by his side. He will not be the man to pamper her, buy her flowers or whisper her sweet nothings. This may sound blunt, but the man lying on the bed is sick, unattractive, unable to talk and is not even able to clean himself, yet loyally, she waits by his side and looks after him.

She looks sad, worried, her forehead furrowed and pain is evident in her eyes. She is in pain. Not because she is alone, but because she sees her husband in pain. To her, seeing him in pain pierces her heart like the spikes of a thousand needles. In her sorrowful eyes, you can see a glimmer of hope. A wish that her husband will be well, and hold her hands again. If this is not true love, what is?

Life isn’t measure by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.
